In times older than any elf of Azeroth, the tailor Vaza'thril invented the very first hood. Vaza (for that was the name his friends gave him) tried it on. With that piece of cloth on his head, Vaza looked great and manlier than any other elf; the dim light that reached his face softened the ugliness of his features. When he walked the streets of the ancient tree city Yolodrassil, the ladies looked at him in awe. He shortly was the sole love interest of the whole female population of the elven kingdoms, which was a shame, for Vaza prefered dudes.

But that was not the only problem Vaza'thril was faced with: the very first hood, as pretty as it was, hurt his long elvish ears. What to do? Vaza spent many a day lost in thought at his tailor shop. One night, as he was meditating and smoking dreamfoil, Elune blessed him with a vision: the ears were the problem! He had to cut them. So the tailor Vaza'thril cut his long ears, put his hood on, and looked even greater. He was completely deaf, but drowning in love letters and gold (for people wanted to look as good as he did, and he was the only tailor in the city).

Year after year, age after age, the Kaldorei of Azeroth followed in his footsteps in their quest for epic look (they were not questing for epic loot yet). When the pretty High Elves were exiled to the eastern lands, they perpetuated this tradition. When Sylvanas was a child, like all elven children, she was looking in awe at those badass Hunterz and Warriorz who sacrificed their ears and hearing on the altar of fashion. One day, she would be one of them.

Then Arthas pwned her. In her final moments of consciousness, Sylvanas was blessed with a vision (probaly sent by the Sunwell, or the Naaru, or the mana thistle she was addicted too, idk): what if there were holes on the sides of the hoods? Holes! Holes large enough to let the eaaaaaaargh...

She died.

She was revived.

She now had a mission: creating the perfect hood, a hood which would not require whoever wanted to wear it to cut their ears in the first place. A hood with holes. And she succeeded, because she's the Dark Lady, and the Dark Lady is awesome.
